Short stiff feathers covering the face are the only special feature protecting the Honey Buzzard (Pernis apivorus) from enraged bees or wasps as it digs out a nest to get at the honey and grubs inside. Its name is apt as far as honey goes, but it is not closely related to true buzzards, despite the fact that it superficially resembles them. It is a highly successful species, with a range extending right across Eurasia from Spain to Japan.

Various foraging methods are used by the Honey Buzzard in its search for the nests of social insects. It may soar or hover, but it also perches to scan an area, and will frequently walk about on the ground. Having located a nest, it digs it out with the feet, slightly assisted by the bill, pulling out chunks of comb and skillfully seizing the adult insects in order to bite off their stings. Where wasps' nests are suspended beneath the eaves of a house, the bird will snatch them off in flight. It will also take small mammals and reptiles, and large insects such as grasshoppers.
