Mughal paintings are endowed with a classical touch, and marked by a rich style and poetic imagination. The era is justly famous for its miniature paintings and illustrations. The themes of the Mughal period did not stop with its descent. They are popular even today and craftsmen of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh do ample justice to it.

This plate adorned with the portraits of Prince Khurram and Arjumand Bano later known as Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal respectively, captures a sensitive moment in their love life. According to legend, Prince Khurram fell in love with Mumtaz at first sight and defied convention by seeking her hand in marriage; he waited five years for their wedding, after which she ruled at his side almost as an equal.

The prince is dressed in his royal attire, his jama reaching his ankles. The turban that modified with every Mughal reign is less elaborate in style but as lavish in ornamentation. He tenderly holds his beloved in his arms, against his knee and caresses her hair. She, in turn, looks content being there and holds his arm with both hands. She looks beautiful in tight trousers, a choli and an odhini. She wears elaborate head ornaments, necklaces, bracelets and anklets.

Big and small bolsters lie around them. A tray with wine caskets as also a 'hookah' can be seen in the foreground.
