Akbar pioneered Mughal Patronage to the art of painting. Indian tradition, local influences, and the Hindu idiom and Indian aesthetics, together with Iranian artists' prior association with the Persian court brought with them elements of imperial Safavid Iran.

This miniature displays numerous features notably the sharp, angular outlining and the unusual physiognomy of the figure and the face is stereotyped and oddly expressive in its very impassiveness. A young girl in a wide sleeved blouse and a long flared skirt swings on a rope securely tied to a slender tree. She wears a typical Iranian headgear and footwear. She holds the rope tightly above the head. Her slightly bended legs depict the strength she exerts to get the swing in motion. She is not of slight built and her sturdy arms testify to it. She wears stone studded necklaces and bangles.

The tree stands vertically on the right of the picture and the swing comes diagonally across the space. The tree has tufts of green sprouting from the trunk. The foreground has pale green grassy slope. The background is in very light blue, almost white. No impressions of either clouds or the skyline are visible. Text in ornate calligraphy is painted above and below the picture. Colours used are unusually subdued as compared to miniatures found of the Akbari period.
