Shiva is a great master of the art of dancing. The Shaivagamas' mention 108 modes of his dance - that of Nataraja being one of them.

Shiva here dances on the prostrate body of the dwarf Apasmara Purusha, who symbolizes ignorance or darkness. Shiva dances, surrounded by fire, which destroys ignorance while evoking creation with the sound of his double-sided drum. The upper left hand of Nataraja bears on its palm, a tongue of flame. While the drum is symbolic of the act of creation, the flame of fire is suggestive of destruction. His lower right hand is held in a gesture of protection while the left is pointed towards the uplifted left foot. Through his frantic motions, Shiva generates the powers of evolution, maintenance and dissolution of the world.

The background of deep blue is totally devoid of crackle, visible only in the lighter hues of the same in the image. It also has a bright border showing the best of crackle effect.
