If any god of the Hindu pantheon is undeniably human as well as divine at the same time, it is Krishna. One of the most familiar images in all Indian art is that of the fluting Krishna. He, however, does not play upon it to please the cows, but to charm the gopis or the cowherdesses.

This painting of Krishna has a passionate intensity - its rich yellows, blues, greens, and oranges endowing its character with glowing fervour, while Krishna, with the robust form and great intent eyes, displays a brusque vitality. Standing, with his feet crossing each other, he is physically irresistibly appealing. He has an exceptionally alluring countenance; a blue complexion, soft like the monsoon clouds; locks of black hair framing a beautifully chiselled face; lotus like eyes; garland around his neck; adorned in his favourite yellow garment and jewellery for every part of his body; a crown lopped by a peacock feather; a smile playing on his lips. His entire persona and the essence of his personality is madhurya. When he plays the flute, its impact is bewitching.

The background shows the marvels of nature. The setting sun in the blue sky, the shimmering water with a pair of swans, the earth sprouting with greenery, all want to pay obeisance to the Divine Soul.

The graceful movement, the blending of colours, and the refined treatment make it a significant creation by Shri Giri Raj of Kishangarh, Rajasthan.
