Portraiture is a means of satisfying a craving for the realities of life, for there is nothing illusory in a likeness - it is a definite and concrete fact of the person's or the animal's existence. This animal portrait was carefully observed and drawn with slow, scientific precision that did not allow the line or color to become purely decorative or independently expressive.

This Lion-tailed macaque monkey is in rigid profile with a high precision of detail, though lacking in lyrical quality. It is the most striking of the sixteen macaque species because of the thick tufts of pale hair around its face. These tufts contrast vividly with the rest of its coat, which is of shiny brown-black color. The artist has carefully balanced the tonal arrangement. The tail is covered with shorter hair and has a tuft at the end. Clarity and variety of brush strokes magnificently depict it. The face is long and thin but looks quite large because of the tufts. The macaque's strong body and powerful muscles have been given effect with the help of varied tones. The forelegs and the hind legs look like human hands and feet respectively. It also has round, owl-like eyes devoid of lids.

This is a naturalistic rendering of the monkey. What comes across, is sympathy with the animal world, which further gives rise to feelings and emotions in their representation.

There are horizontal green stripes in the foreground and blue ones at the upper edge. The artist has avoided adding superfluous details and overloading the background.
