Mahavira is said to be the historical founder of Jainism. There were twenty three tirthankaras (prophets / gurus) before him. Mahavira was a kshatriya, born to Siddhartha and Trishla in Kundagrama, in Bihar. At the age of thirty, he renounced his family, became an ascetic and set out in search of truth. In the thirteenth year of his asceticism, he attained enlightenment. From that time onwards, he was called 'Jaina'. At the age of 72, he attained moksha at Pava, near Patna.

Using silk as the base for his creation, the artist has painted a simple figure held in high esteem the world over - A seated Tirthankara Mahavira. Though it is very difficult to handle a theme so simple as that of a figure like the Tirthankara, the painter has made the creation truly artistic. Sitting cross-legged with his palms resting upon each other, Mahavira meditates with semi-open eyes. He is shown with the mahapurusha lakshanas. Mahavira believed in karma and in transmigration of soul and preached the three fold path of right faith, right knowledge, and right conduct.

To reiterate the teachings associated with Mahavira, the artist has spelt them for the uninitiated.
