The two figures are deeply in conversation, and the gestures of their hands suggest that the noble man is elaborating his minds preoccupations, while the saint is making a reassuring gesture, as if signifying that he has a solution to the problem ready in hand.
The jar and goblet placed in the center have obviously been laid out for the distinguished guest. The landscape depicts a dark cloudy night which the artist has radiated with a casual lighting. Far-off rays of stars can be seen stealing through the clouds. It is this light which is illuminating the two figures, and the part of the landscape which consists of the Sufi's hut, a few trees, grass-beads and ferns. The fire in the Sufi's context is somewhat queer, and speaks more of winter, than of the Sufi cult.
