Mughal paintings, the art of the elite, endowed with a classical touch and marked by a rich style flourished under Mughal emperors. Akbar pioneered Mughal patronage to the art of painting. Akbar's interest in the elephant almost verged on infatuation.

This miniature painting of the huge animals is accurate, attractive and full of vigour. In the foreground is a small pod where three elephants indulge in playful activity. One of them seems to have had enough and is walking out of the pond. On land two of them are engaged in a tug of strength - one trunk clasping the other. Two elephants in the distance are happy with themselves. This picture brings out the gentleness and playfulness of these massive animals. The pigment used is close to their natural color.

The pond is painted in an unusual color with lotus flowers and leaves dotting it. The trees on either side of the picture balance it compositionally. One tree on the right uses golden pigment, not frequently used in miniatures of this period. From the details of the landscape comprising hills of many hues with modulated contours and trees, sky with brilliant blue and orange sky akin to Persian art, it appears as an early Mughal artwork.

The beauty of the painting is not limited to the rectangular frame alone. On all three sides of the border are elephants in various moods, various movements and actions - what is common to all figures is their playfulness. The shadow beneath each elephant gives the impression of solid earth under their feet - without which they would appear hanging in space. Different emotions and moods of one single animal are compiled in one painting of a miniature size is what is compelling about this painting.
