It is a fairly common bird of the tree-scattered open country in India south of the Himalayas. It is also less commonly found in Africa, south of the Sahara, usually in high rainfall, low-lying, swampy savannas. It is a distinctive species, usually found in pairs, both at rest and when hunting. Seldom straying far from its breeding site, it is a small and very active falcon, which takes birds in flight, and occasionally bats, as well as ground-based vertebrates such as lizards.
