Human portraiture is the most important subject of representation in the paintings of the Mughal school. They reflect the intimate scale and elegant simplicity.

Fine as a hair, as clear and definite as it is possible for human hand and eye to make it, the line of the features in this portrait is a remarkable piece of execution. Facing towards the left, Shah Jahan is seated on a grand throne with fine inlay work. Resting against a huge bolster, he sits with his legs folded in. Rich ornaments decorate his person as much as they do his turban, with a plume at the pinnacle. Tucked at his waist is a small dagger, which had no place in his romantic oeuvres. A fly whisk lies abandoned as he has sent the maid in waiting away, to be alone with his beloved.

Shah Jahan's portrait occupies a small portion of the miniature, the rest depicting architectural and floral patterns on all sides of the portrait. This description by Renu Rana.
