Shiva is not only the ascetic, the divine hermit who meditates, seated upon the Himalayas. He is also a family man, residing in Kailash, enjoying his marital bliss. Here he is seen with his wife Parvati on his vehicle, Nandi, the bull. Shiva is shown in a frontal position, having four hands. He holds his attribute, the damaru in one hand and a deer in the other. The latter justifies Shiva's title of Pashupati. The normal right hand is raised in abhaya mudra. He wears a Karanda mukuta, flanked by a crescent moon, earning him the title of Chandra-chuda. Parvati, Shiva's Shakti, sits in a partially cross-legged position, with one hand in abhaya and the other in dolahasta mudra. She is Shiva's constant travelling companion.
Shiva's bull is tame and gentle, serving as his vehicle. The colours used in this Kalamkari are subdued and toned down and go well with the sanctity of the theme.
