Figures such as this fashionably dressed youth reveal the continuing popularity of paintings of handsome young men in opulent clothes witnessed in Persian paintings. The two hemistiches of the poem which this young lad holds read:

May the world fulfill your wishes from
three lips,
The lips of the beloved, the lips of a
stream, and the lips of a cup,
May you remain in this world so long
That you pray on the grave of the
firmament.

Although the cup (of wine) is absent, the stream is included at the lower left and the young man may be considered the beloved. Each is a metaphor for the love object. The picture thus is the visual equivalent of the poem even if it is not an illustration.
