Surya is portrayed with one head and four arms. Sitting here cross legged on a lotus seat, he resembles the iconic image of Lord Vishnu. He wears jewellery and his head is crowned with the same Kirtimukuta as Vishnu and is encircled by a halo. He holds a conch and a discuss in two hands and with the front left hand he is bestowing blessings. He rides in a chariot drawn by radiant white steeds, seven in number. Aruna, the Dawn is his charioteer. Surya illuminates the earth, infusing energy into all creatures, reaching to the utmost ends of all directions. This is why his horses are shown pursuing directions all round.
The colours used in the background are sharply contrasting but present transition from night to dawn. The white, harnessed horses are depicted as brilliantly as the rest of the composition. Silk, used as the base for the painting has imbibed colours better than either paper or a canvas. The bright colour palette adds glory to the image of an important element of worship in Hindu ritual life.
