In Northern India, Ram is perhaps the most popular of all the incarnations of Vishnu and the Ramayana, in which his history is found, contains some of the most beautiful legends. According to mythology, Rama was the king of Ayodhya and established a golden age of justice, helped and revered by the monkey god Hanuman.

On a brilliant blue background is the serene image of Lord Rama. Majestically dressed as a prince, he wears an elaborate crown with the emblem of the sun, depicting his status of "Suryavanshi", the descendent of the sun god. On a perfectly oval face are lotus like eyes, a shapely nose and a subtle smile. Wearing necklaces, garland, bracelets and rings, he is richly ornamented. His lower garment is held at the waist by a fancy belt. His shoulder cloth covers his left shoulder and passes on to the right arm. In either of his finely shaped hands, he holds a bow and an arrow. The end of the bow as well as the top of the quiver are shaped like a bird's head. The quiver has arrows as Lord Rama extracts one, ready to put it to the bow and shoot. 'To shoot' is symbolic of shooting away the evil and sorrows of the world.

If the background is done in luminous colour, the protagonist is no less brilliantly coloured giving it a folkish look where juxtaposition of colours is not a criterion.
