Ladakh is a region of plateaus situated between the Himalayas and the Karakoram ranges. Tibetans, the principal inhabitants of Ladakh, are known for their distinguished handicrafts and art works. Although the purpose of works of art from Ladakh was essentially that of earning religious merit but depiction of the common man and genre scenes were popular too.

This painting is an illustration with a text on the back. It depicts an old man dressed in the local attire. A yellow tunic with long sleeves is topped by a red over coat with large armholes. A brooch kind of metallic decorations are seen on either side. Around the shoulders is a cape of fur. Similar fur also makes the cap that he wears. The brightness of red and yellow is toned down by the brown. The thick beard and long, flowing moustaches build the man's personality. The wrinkles on his forehead speak of the wisdom he has accumulated over the years. The hands and fingers are delicate in comparison to the bulky body.

The distinguishing feature of this painting is the very simple treatment of the figure. The fluently drawn outlines, well balanced colours and discreet shading have resulted in an illusion of roundness and warmth of flesh.
