This sculpture of Amitabha or Amitayus is worshipped in special ceremonies for obtaining long life. He is the principal Buddha in the pure land Buddhism known for longevity, pure perception and deep awareness of emptiness. Amitabha means, ‘infiite light’ and Amitayus means, ‘infinite life’, hence, he is also called ‘the Buddha of immeasurable light and life’. After attaining Buddhahood, he is said to have created a pure land called ‘Sukhavati’ situated beyond the bounds of our own world. Those who call upon him are pre-assumed to be reborn in this world to attain Boddhisattva and help people in the world outside.
He wears an artistic crown and carries ambrosia vase from which spill the jewels of eternal life. He sits in a lotus posture of meditation and wears richly patterned attire inlayed with blue and red colored stones, where red stones form the border, lines and the stole hanging on arms with beautifully constructed ends. The three curved lines on the neck signify his deep voice and the design of the neckpiece is complementing with that of the crown.
