The Bodhi tree is where the Enlightenment occurred. In the shade of its evergreen canopy, the erstwhile Shakyamuni made the transition from wandering ascetic to Buddhahood. Years after having renounced the life He was born into - the luxuries of His father’s palace, the gorgeous Yashodhara and their son, and His kingly duties towards the Shakya clan - did Gautama step into the shade of the Bodhi tree and fell into profound contemplation. The supersized wall-hanging that you see on this page is a glamorous replica of this all-important tree.
Sculpted from pure brass, the work has been executed with considerable precision and attention to each detail. A short, thick stem, which is one-third the stature of the composition; it is teeming with life in the hints of root growing from the bark and the lower branches. Relative to the canopy, its solid body is characterised by lifelike undulations that you may zoom in on.
The soul of this sculpture, however, lies in the canopy. Luxuriant and wide-set, it spreads further at its widest than it reaches upwards in terms of stature. The branches of the shoot reach out in every direction, sprouting forth delicately carved leaves of a resplendent gold colour, making for a symmetrical silhouette that is sure to add to the aesthetics of your space. Note how at some points in the work, the density of the leaves being greater leads to a seductive gradient of gold colour across the composition.
