Lord Ganesha is the most adorable deity of the Hindu pantheon. This gentle boy-God is revered for His propensity to bless His devotees and His love of laddoos, an auspicious Indian sweetmeat. His usual iconography comprises of atleast one of His four arms bearing a bowl of sweets, but this sculpture from the Exotic India collection portrays a different side of His personality. The Lord Ganesha is reclining against a pillow, His plump baby legs hunched up to balance a Mahabharata between His knees. His gentle fingers together hold the book wide open.
From His composure of countenance, the Lord is deeply absorbed in his reading of the epic. His baby head is lowered at a highly focussed angle upon the book, whilst His large eyes with its lowered lids bear the eerie calmness the pleasure of reading lends the gaze. His smooth silken dhoti, of a youthful shade of peach, has been draped with great skill over His legs. He is wearing a gold-laced silver shirt, and a trident tattoo graces His forehead, indicating that He is the child of Shivaji. The most remarkable feature of this sculpture is the thick chotee on the crown of His baby head, symbolic of His Brahmachari roop (celibate form).
