In the Hinayana form of Buddhism, the Buddha image had no place as the Buddha himself was against image worship. With the rise and spread of Mahayanism in Northwest India, the image of the Buddha was introduced into Buddhist art.

In this delicate image of Buddha, moulded in brass, the Buddhist ideal of serenity finds a noble expression, with the form of the Buddha's body, the expression on his face, and the smile suggesting the ultimate harmony achieved by the Enlightened one. This standing image of the Buddha is entirely clothed in the monastic robe, the folds of which fall as parallel loops. This garment is called tricivara and extends from neck to ankles. The brass garment attains a transparency with the body form of Buddha clearly visible beneath the garment. He stands in the abhaya mudra

, the fear not or protection assuring posture of the hand. In this hand pose, the right hand is lifted and the palm of the hand with the fingers extended upwards face outwards.

The dignified image of Buddha stands under a decorative arch. Part of the arch and the fancy seat below are left in golden, together with the long flowing robe of the Buddha. The face of yaksha prominently appears above and below, which is taken from the sculptures of Sanchi and Bharhut where Jataka stories, the yakshas and the yakshinis are portrayed with great force.

A small image of a great person!
