The healing aspect of the Shakyamuni Buddha, popularly called the Medicine Buddha. He is Lord Bhaishajyaguru, the presiding deity over traditional Tibetan medicine. From the padmasana and the erect spine to the composure of countenance, everything about the murti that you see on this page is in keeping with the Shakyamuni’s iconography. However, it is what the seated-contemplative Buddha bears in His hands that distinguish Him as the Medicine Buddha - a pot of three elixirs on the palm of His left hand, a myrobalan sprig betwixt the fingers of His right.
The blended elixir is mythically concocted to reverse disease, senescence, and death, respectively. The myrobalan plant, a sprig of which is wielded by the Bhaishajyaguru, is at the heart of the Tibetan medical shastras, an integral component of the potions that heal. Lord Bhaishajyaguru is seated on a lotus pedestal with gold undertones, His gold-hemmed robe draped over a single shoulder. Finely drawn features define His soft face framed by a pair of ears lengthened by profound wisdom. This sculpture is available in a handful of monotone colours.
