This kantha work bed cover has travelled all the way from Eastern Bengal. This traditional village art has come a large way from the villages into our homes, in the form of sarees, yards of fabric, and of course, bed covers and quilts. The art of kantha is an enriched textile version, of the art of aripana, the painting on the floor.

The main field of the bed cover is maroon with the impression of the straight stitch. It has black stems and leaves going criss-cross, making squares. Each square thus formed has a yellow ochre leaf pattern. The embroidery is a simple running stitch in just one colour - ochre. It outlines the black and ochre patterns on the maroon ground. Within its firm contours, the running stitches produce different colour values, but together with the particular texture of the surface, they give a totality of its own to each kantha. It has an elaborate border of various stripes of ochre with a rare maroon stripe. On these stripes are different printed patterns run over by the running stitches. The reverse has a plain sheet attached together before the embroidery takes place. The kantha stitch can be viewed, done with nearly equal perfection on both sides. The edges are criss-crossed with yellow ochre thread, lending an unusual beauty to the last black stripe.

This kind of thick sheet can double up as an over-sheet when its cool, but not enough for a blanket.
