This thick cotton bed sheet come from the village of Sanganer near Jaipur. Sanganer is best known for its block printing technique. On a pale background, all over the field is printed a variety of flora and fauna. Since Rajasthan is an arid desert, they have a fascination for all kinds of plants and animals not commonly found here. Pastel green colour is used for the basic print. The designer goes over board with his love for animals. Since they are so familiar with camels, one would expect the ship of the desert to feature more often, but here we find herds of elephants occupying the prime position. Printed in their natural grey colour, they are block printed over the soft green flora and fauna. The border has two adults in repetitive pattern. These two rows are interspersed by narrow rows of geometric design. The length of the block can be gauged as they break the line when lighted for the next press. The printing may not be of the finest quality but the adorable elephants do steal your heart.
