Buddha's extended right hand here is opened in the gift-bestowing gesture (varada mudra), "the gesture (mudra) that bestows (da) a wish or boon (vara)." With this gesture of supreme giving, Shakyamuni Buddha showers the world with precious things. This mudra symbolizes charity, compassion and boon-granting. It is the mudra of the accomplishment of the wish to devote oneself to human salvation.

The five extended fingers in this mudra symbolize the following five perfections:

1). Generosity
2). Morality
3). Patience
4). Effort
5). Meditative Concentration

The image shows the ushnisha (a bump protruding from the top of his head), symbolizing his superior intelligence, and his brow has in the center a circular mark like the third eye.

On the reverse side, below Shakyamuni's seat is carved Tibet's most holy mantra, namely Om Mani Padme Hum. This can be seen in the accompanying image.
