The word jugalbandi literally meaning entwined twins is a style in Indian classical music whereby two solo musicians render a performance together.
When first introduced jugalbandi mostly took place between two musicians of the same style (vocal or instrumental). However with gaining popularity performances have often showcased the coming together of both vocal and instrumental maestros. In some cases the jugalbandis have been between two different traditions Carnatic and Hindustani.
The concept of jugalbandi is to pit two artistes of the same or similar caliber against each other such that both are on equal footing. Such a performance clearly showcases both artistes as soloists in their own right. What ensues is a delightful and mesmerizing dialogue of notes rhythms and styles. There is much synchronicity that must be achieved for a harmonious appeal and artistes often tread a narrow line of caution to keep their individual styles intact.
This two volume CD presents a collection of the finest and rarest jugalbandis between maestros of Indian classical music. Features are great pairs such as Ustad Bismillah Khan & Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma & Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, Mandolin U Shrinivas & Ustad Sultan Khan, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt & Ronu Majumdar and many others.
