Dr. Prabha Atre was trained in the traditional ‘guru-shishya parampara’ by the two doyens of the Kirana Gharana - the late Sureshbabu Mane and his famous sister Padmabhushan Hirabai Badodekar. She also drew much inspiration from the styles of the renowned maestros, Amir Khan and Bade Gulam Ali Khan. Today, she is herself an acclaimed guru both in performance and research. Additionally, she has been teaching at foreign universities as a visiting professor. Her public concerts, Radio and TV programs and lecture - demonstrations in India and abroad to audiences of varying tastes have always been highly appreciated. She was honoured with the National Award - ‘PADMASHREE’ in 1990 and the ‘SANGEET NATAK ACADEMY’ award in 1991 as the Indian Government’s appreciation for her outstanding role in enriching, preserving and popularizing the Indian Music.

Dr. Atre’s sincerity and sensitivity towards music clearly surface in her thinking and singing. Whether she renders a khayal, Tarana, Thumri, Dadra, Ghazal or Bhajan, her distinct style and typical ingenuity in design and presentation is always visible. Indeed, her pleasant and dignified presence on stage, her chaste and creative approach towards music, her imaginative play with subtleties of tones, her effortless control over intricate yet appealing phrases in aalaap, taan and sargam and her stirring portrayal of the emotional themes make her music a singularly satisfying experience.

This album present Raag Chandrakauns in the voice of the eminent classical singer Dr. Prabha Atre.

Raag Chandrakauns - a pentatonic late night Raag

Raag Chandrakauns is a classical North Indian moon Raag. It belongs to the ‘Kauns’ group but has the note shuddha nishad as its anchor. Except for this note, it is similar to Raag Maalkauns and is rendered in semblance to it. However, shuddha nishad marks it with a noticeable difference and lends Raag Chandrakauns a totally different character. Dr. Prabha Atre’s measured exploration of the subtle nuances of this Raag depicts the right mood, thus instantly reaching the inner depths of the listeners.
