About the Band

In this global village of today India is at the cultural crossroads. The youth of today are exposed to a kaleidoscope of colors and flavors when it comes to culture music dress and cuisine. Purbayan Chatterjee’s Shastriya Syndicate stands out uniquely as the only Indian classical band which battles cultural homogeneity by looking inward within the parameters of Indian classical music and yet retains the global look and feel of a band.

About the Album

Lehar the first album of Shastriya syndicate is unique in many ways. It traverses the many facets of Indian classical music or Shastriya Sangeet and then links each one of these facets to certain human emotions like joy, pain, pathos which are universal the tracks paint in short capsules of a few minutes each a visual image which is spelt out in the name itself. The true spirit of the ragas on which these compositions are based is captured on a global canvas. The interactivity between instruments the terseness of the compositions and the sheer multiplicity of layers of sound show that while the content is traditional the form is contemporary.

Purbayan Chatterjee

Shastriya Syndicate is the brain child of Purbayan as an extension to his Endeavour to popularize Indian classical music among the present generation of Indians. Purbayan is one of the most sought after Sitar players of India. He plays the matchless style of Pt. Nikhil Banerjee and is a torch bearer of the Senia Maihar gharana of Baba Alauddin Khan. Purbayan regularly performs in India and all other continents in most of the major festivals and venues like the Sydney Opera House, Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, Esplanade Theatres, Singapore, Theatre de la Ville Paris Ted Baxter Hall Cape town symphony space, NY etc. he is regularly accompanied by Ustaad Zakir Hussain. Pt. Anindo Chatterjee among others. He is recipient of the president’s Award for being the best instrumentalist of the country Purbayan has made a niche for himself with his inimitable style of sitar vaadan.
