About the CD

K.S. Gopalakrishnan has selected a very powerful composition of Dikshitar in Sree ragam as his first item in this recording. This popular krithi has been rendered with heartfelt devotion to the goddess Varalakshmi. The composition of the Saint Thyagaraja in Ragam Harikamboji has been given an elaborated treatment by the artiste thus enhancing the deep sense of passion already existing in the composition. He pays a tribute to the great composer Maharaja Swathi Thirunal in his rendering of “Gopalaka Pahimam” in Revagupthi ragam reflecting a certain introspection. He is in elements in the rendering of the yoga alapana in Ragam Kappi. It reveals great technique and exquisite balance of presentation. The Ahir Bhairav ragam piece is on a long bamboo flute and reveal his expertise and sensitiveness.

His is a name that shines bright in the realm of the carnatic Music system. A noted flautist today K.S. Gopalakrishnan’s talent was evident even at the tender age of nine. Under the loving guidance of his father Sri. K. Sankaranarayana Iyer and later Sri K.S. Raghava warier his musical genius was nurtured to perfection. At the age of 15 Sri K.S. Gopalakrishnan received the first public acknowledgement of his superior talent when he became the recipient of the first prize at the all India music competition organized by the all India Radio in 1965, and hence began his journey into the world of music where he went on to win several prestigious awards and titles like the Kalarathnam. He joined the all India radio in the year 1973 featured in the national programme of music in 1981 and in 1997 and has been giving concerts in almost all the leading musical sabhas in the country. The director general of all India Radio awarded the top grade to him while in the same year he got the Kerala Sangeetha Natak Academy award. Intelligent planning innovative playing soulful delineation of ragas and persuasive development of Krithia lend an unforgettable charm to his concerts. Today K.S. Gopalakrishnan’s musical tryst continues as he goes on dazzling us with his music. In this recording he is accompanied on the mridangam by Shri Guruvayur Dorai on ghatam by Shri M.A. Krishnamurthy and violin accompaniment is provided by Shri Delhi P. Sunder Rajan. No Amount of Praise can be adequate to express the role played by Shri Guruvayur Dorai in planning and providing guidance during this entire recording.
