About The Artists

Sangeet Martand Pt. Jasraj
With a rich, soul stirring and sonorous voice, traversing effortlessly across three and a half octaves, Sangeet Martand Pt. Jasraj is one of the jewels of Indian Classical Music.Pt.Jasraj, a maestro of the Mewati Gharana was initiated into vocal music by his father Pt. Motiramji. He also received training from his elder brother, Pt. Maniramji and later from Maharaja jaywant Singhji Waghela. His greatest contribution to Indian classical music is his concept of a unique and novel jugalbandi, styled on the ancient system of ‘moorchanas’ between a male and a female vocalist, each singing in their respective scales and different ragas at the same time. A foreign university like the University of Toronto has instituted a scholarship in his name for young Canadians wishing to train in music and an auditorium in New York in his name stand testimony to his greatness. A strong believer of the Guru-Shishya parampara, be it day or night, Panditji is surrounded by disciples always, even as he teaches them the nuances of his art. Besides the prestigious Padma Vibhushan, many other titles have also been conferred on Panditji.
