About the CD

Acknowledged as the leading light of the Kriana Gharana, Pandit Bhimsen Gururaj Joshi is a sheer musical marvel whose singing invariably provides listeners with a divine musical experience. Born in 1922 into a conservative Brahmin family in gadag. Karnataka Bhimsen Joshi displayed the sings of being a musical genius from an early age. He ran away from him and started learning music at the age of 11 against his father’s wishes. But when his father became aware of Bhimsen’s talent in singing and his fervent desire for knowledge in music he made arrangements for him to learn under the guidance of Sawai Gandharva of Kundol a pupil of Ustad Abdul Karim Khan.

His natural tuneful voice received further polish under the tutelage of his guru and with relentless riyaaz his gayaki began to shine with a new luminescence that has dazzled the entire country. Through his amazing absorption of the soul of various gayaki styles he ahs created a unique musical blend adding his own introspective aesthetic sense to it that is fascinating structured and innovative all at one. For over four decades now he has been leading the renaissance of Indian classical music with the passion and power of a singer drenched in single pointed thirst for music.
