Legendary Love Stories of Punjab
It may be said that Punjab and the rest of north India has an obsession with love stories especially those of the tragic kind usually celebratory in nature. Punjab music is joyful with the exception of these tragic stories. The feeling of the true love, the sorrow of separation from a lover and the joy of reuniting are the themes that these songs express through these stories.
The legendary love of Dhola Maru, Sassi Punno, Heer Ranjha, Sohni Mahiwal etc are so permanently imprinted in the minds of the people of north India that each culture group has its own set of songs devoted to these lovers.
