Rajshwari – A Rare Raag (which is quite different from Rageshwari of Rageshri) is a Pentatonic i.e. Audav raga (Melody with 5 notes). The notes used in this raga are Sa Ga Ma Dha Ni Sa. All notes are natural (Shudh) except the 2nd note i.e. Gandhar (Ga) which is flat (Komal).
In terms of melodic affinity, Rajeshwari belongs to the ‘Kauns’ family. Malkauns, Chandrakauns and Rajeshwari are all Pentatonic variations upon an identical cluster of notes Sa Ga Ma Dha Ni Sa. In Malkauns Ga Dha and are flat (Komal) whereas in Chandrakauns Ga and Dha are flat (Komal) and in Rajeshwari only Ga is flat (Komal). Although all the three are nocturnal melodies, each one has a distinct melodic profile of its own. The Vaso Swar i.e. dominant not is Madhyam (Ma) and Samvadi Swar is Shadaj (Sa). The Arohi (Ascent of notes) is Sa Ga Ma Dha Ni Sa the Avrohi (descent of notes) is Sa Ni Dha Ma Ga Sa. Rajeshwari is a late night melody.
