Of the two famous epics, Ramayana and Mahabharata, Ramayana is enacted or presented by the people of different regions in different ways. In the 24 Pargana region of West Bengal, they do it through a puppet show. The sutradhar-cum-interpreter-cum-narrator si9ts behind the curtain, along with his group of singers and manipulators, who make the puppets move and convey a myriad and complex variety of expressions. The music is a blend of classical Indian or Shastriya Sangeet, tunes of folk songs and even film tunes. The instruments used are shahnai, harmonium and dholak. A very absorbing performance.
