The four-armed, elephant-headed Lord Ganesha is the subject of this Tanjore-style painting. A foot rests on the floor. The other is folded. Ganesha is partly on Earth, and partly in Heaven. The four arms represent the human mind, ego, intellect, and emotional reactions. Ganesha is the conqueror of all obstacles. This omnipotent God has large ears, which hear even the tiniest of whispers. The trunk is a representation of immense wisdom. His devotees can reach out to the omnipresent son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi, from anywhere and everywhere.
Ganesha’s hands hold four important symbols. The right hands cling to a hatchet and broken tusk. The hatchet suggests that sincere worship will result in enlightenment. In turn, this will result in the discarding of all past karmas, both good and bad. A new life should bring on the accumulation of new karmas, especially good ones. The broken tusk indicates that a wise individual is beyond duality. The left hands hold a lotus flower and a modak (sweet laddoo). The flower is symbolic of dawning enlightenment, while the modak is a reward for doing good deeds. A bowl of laddoos is placed in front of Ganesha, for they are his favourite sweets. Such is the divinity of this Bhagawan Ganesha Tanjore painting.
