Lord Krishna is the theme of choice with folk artists across India. This is because of His diverse leela and the surreal quality of His mythical ihalokiya (earthly) life. The work of art that you see on this page is a pattachitra: ‘patta’ is the name given to the locally handmade canvas, ‘chitra’ is the Sanskrt word for image. Needless to say, it is on the quality of the patta that the finish of the painting depends on. Pattachitras are usually austere bitone compositions. This one features a wide central panel, which is further subdivided into multiple panels. The centremost one depicts the victory of Lord Krishna over the evil snake of the oceans, Kaaliya, upon whose head He plays the strain of victory and dances. The mer-people whom Kaaliya had tormented rise from the waters in veneration of their Vishnu-avatara saviour.

The four panels that surround this episode feature the Lord amidst His various victories over evil and adharma, but for one which depicts Him playing with His friend the cow. The same are flanked by miniature Vishnu-avataras. A series of lotus-shaped panels surround this composite central panel. Each of them depicts a snatch of Krishnaleela, the unmistakable as well as the obscure.
