The California Condor is a relic left from millions of years ago. The remaining few condors left were live-trapped a number of years ago and were used in a breeding program that has been very successful. Many condors have now been returned to the wilderness area that was their former home.

The condor is the largest bird in North America, having a bill-to-tail-tip length of upto 55 inches (1.4 meters). Its wingspan is about 114 inches (2.8 meters) and it weighs from 25 to 30 pounds (11.25 to 13.5 kilograms). It soars at a speed of 35 to 40 miles (56 to 64 kilometers) per hour.

Like the other vultures, the male and female look alike. Their basic body plumage is black, although there is a white line in each of the underiwngs. The head skin is an orange color, and they have a purplish red patch of skin in the lower neck. Their bills are white, their eyes are red, and their tarsi and feet are pink.
