In the recesses of the Deccan plateau live a happy, worldly tribe. They go by the name of Warli and make unusual works of art, the likes of which are to be found in no other folk art of India. The Warli people tend to make a celebration out of immediate life and living, without delving overmuch into it, which reflects in their signature white and monotone paintings like the one you see on this page. It depicts the live-giving tree in all the fullness of youth and plenitude, an image of rootedness and forbearance and beauty.

The strong, slender shoot of the tree of life has been thickly layered with white paint. The branches are tapering outwards, the blades of verdure emerging from them having been done with repetitive, self-assured strokes of a rudimentary brush. Note the language of merrymaking in the bodies of the tribesfolk at the foot of the tree. To the left is a human-chain choreography, to the right a trumpeter and a band of dancers. A pair of exotic birds of the tropics flanks the canopy of the live-giving tree.
