Buddha is not a proper name, but an attribute of one who has recognized as having attained wisdom (bodhi) that illuminates the darkness of ignorance.

The life of Buddha has been a subject of many a tale and subsequently art. The artist of this Buddha painting on silk divides the canvas into clear cut sections to narrate the story of his birth and a saint's prediction that led to him being kept away from the realities of life. In some sections, the artist shows Buddha coming face to face with old age, sickness and death that changes the course of his life. The lower segments see him leave home in search of nirvana, till he attains it, including episodes relating to Sujata and Mara.

The artist has devoted a major and central part to the Parinirvana of Buddha with his followers around him. As in all paintings with Buddha as its theme, there is peace and tranquillity reflected. The artist has adhered to chronological narration of events, using a bright and colourful palette.
