Son of Shiva, child of Parvati. Lord Ganesha is one of the most widely revered deva of the Hindu pantheon. He is a bala-deva, which translates to child deity, and it is owing to His childlike wisdom and innocence that devotees everywhere turn to Him in need of succour. In this watercolour, the childlike demeanour of Lord Ganesha is juxtaposed with the glory of His divine status.

On a bejewelled throne of red velvet sits Ganesha. His dhoti of yellow silk matches the gold filigree of the asana, and is complemented by an embellished aquamarine angavastram. The adornments on His person befit the prince of the heavens: streams of pearls interspersed with bright red rubies and gorgeous green emeralds. A garland of fresh pink and white flowers makes His shringar complete. A superfine crown graces His adorable elephant head, His complexion a shade of the tropical sunset.

At the foot of Lord Ganesha’s throne is His vahana the mouse, looking longingly at its master’s plateful of laddoos. The arrangement is set in a carpeted veranda, much like the interiors of the palaces of yore, replete with a pristine latticework balustrade and a generous glimpse of the gardens beyond. In the background, the colours of the setting sun blend into the fair heavens.
