Flowers were a common motif and an integral part of design in Indian art from very early times but it was only with the emergence of the Mughal school that they became subjects of paintings, rather than mere embellishments. Floral patterns are extensively found in Mughal decorative arts, carpets and architecture, though miniature floral paintings are most notable.

This painting fully conforms to the rules of naturalistic study together with its aesthetic appeal. These blooming flowers in pink, along with half a dozen buds form the entire composition. Full focus is on the flowers showing different folds of petals concerting with various stages of blossoming. The petals are closely packed even in full bloomed flowers. The sepals adoringly enclose the tender buds as if trying to protect them from the sharp thorns. Leaves are concentrated on the lower half of the stem. They are curling inwards. Fine brush strokes and excellent shading render a very naturalistic look enhanced by the delicate venation proceeding towards the margin of the leaf blade. The stem is sturdy and firm, bearing sharp thorns. With prominence to the central theme, the background is subdued. It certainly bears unmistakable traits of the Jehangiri tradition.

The drawing is very fine and the details of leaves and flowers are rendered precisely and in a very delicate manner imbibing a lyrical quality of nature. However this wonderful perfection of the floral composition is delicately hung in space without even an impression of it being rooted to the ground.
