Sacred texts depict Lakshmi as the goddess of wealth and fortune, royal power and beauty. She is said to have risen from the churning of the ocean. Vishnu was mesmerized by her beauty and took her for his wife.

Most of Lakshmi's images depict her as seated on a lotus. Here, she stands on a lotus-like centre, the image beautifully modeled. The four-armed Goddess holds lotus flowers in two hands - lotus in relation to Sri- Lakshmi refers to spiritual power and purity. In the left hand, she holds the auspicious pot, which is considered to be the harbinger of good fortune and success in life. Her right hand is raised in a gesture of blessing. Her face is broad and instead of the usual youthfulness, there is an element of maturity. Embellished ornaments adorn her body to strengthen her status as the goddess of wealth. A pink halo surrounds her head as her long, flowing tresses form a halo around her body. She stands under an ornate niche.

In the foreground is an owl, known to be goddess Lakshmi's vehicle.
