The goddess of love and carnal desire, Rati, is depicted in this Tanjore painting in brilliant hues of blue and pink. She is a partner to Kama Deva, the god of love, and acts as an eternal confidante to him. She is the epitome of youth and beauty, coveted by all.
Hers and Kamadeva’s story is one that is often forgotten by the masses. They were the perfect companions to one another, fitting to each other like missing puzzle pieces. When Shiva went into deep meditation after the death of Sati, it was their responsibility to open his eyes again to love. Kama shot him with his arrows so Shiva and Parvati could be reunited. They were successful, however, Shiva was angry at his broken concentration and burned Kama right down ashes with his wrath. Rati was overwrought with grief and pleaded with Parvati to bring her husband back. Moved by her pleading, Shiva and Parvati reassured her that he would be resurrected and she would have to take care of him until he was of age. She stayed at Sambara’s house as his kitchen maid and awaited the arrival of Krishna’s son, Pradyuman, who will be the reincarnation of Kamadeva.
