Look how She glows, the fair Sarasvati steeped in the sound of the music emanating from Her own veena. She sits in lalitasana, nestled against the belly of a lotus whose petals are not fairer than She is. A garland of fresh flowers sets off Her perfect, Devi-like shringar. A tall crown studded luxuriantly with rubies and emeralds, beneath which lies a composure of perfect serenity.
Sarasvati is the presiding deity over learning and the fine arts. This explains the veena in Her anterior hands, without which Her iconography is incomplete. In Her posterior hands are a pothi and a mala. The seated figure is housed within a traditional temple structure executed in dense gesso work superimposed with pure gold. Gleaming bits of red- and green-coloured stone have been skilfully inlaid against the same, which gives off the impression of rubies and emeralds.
Such is the glamour of the traditional-style Tanjore painting. With the olive-coloured complexion of the Devi and the ample proportions of gold, it could have been a monotone composition but for the solid red background and the white upholstery behind Her. A statement Sarasvati destined to grace the home of the art-loving devotee.
