The picture frame of this composition consists of two horizontally divided segments, each with a herd of three elephants. As for overall appearance, the picture represents a beautiful landscape of a hilly terrain indicated by the range of mounds (and rocks) spread through continuously undulating vistas.

The elephants of the herd in the foreground are huddled together displaying a sportive mood. The one at right is amusingly climbing upon the back of the one on left who is couched on the ground withstanding the tenacity. The third elephant on the farther end of this group is a calf, trying to join in the frolic of the two.

This herd's composition is centrally configured in the given pictorial segment, complete in itself and independent from the herd represented on another plane above.

The upper spatial segment represents an equal number of elephants strolling leftwards, totally oblivious and compositionally independent from the first herd. In their march is displayed the imposing vigor and the power of the animal. There is also evident a sense of calm and royalty, typical of the most classic representations of this animal in Mughal court painting.

In the background are smaller mounds with bushes behind and clouds beyond. Though occupying little space at the top end of the picture-frame, the sky and clouds are delineated skillfully with a realistic approach, which goes far to contribute to the ambiance of the painting. A couple of trees rooted in the borderland of the two spatial segments bring to life a certain environmental and geographical reality in the scene besides lending a natural air to the composition. Incidentally, it also decentralizes the composition of the upper herd.
