Lord Hanuman To The Rescue

$255
In the necklace of Ramayana characters, Lord Hanuman is the brightest shining jewel. Not once does He leave Lord Rama’s side in His times of despair, single-handedly revives His brother Lakhsmana, and reaches the captive Mother Seeta before anybody else. The watercolour that you see on this page depicts the thick-jawed deity in a moment of great valor and triumph - whilst He bears the mount of sanjeevani all the way from the Himalayas to the mouth of Lanka.

Lord Hanuman is a yogi of the highest order. His proportion of form and speed of motion are within His voluntary control. These siddhis (divine accomplishments, of which He has all eight of them as a result of His sadhana) are what enable Him to traverse across the subcontinent to the Himalayas and, when He could not identify which of the herbs could heal the injured Lakshmana down in Lanka, uproot the whole mount to bring it back with Him.

In this watercolour, the solitary Hanuman is in a short red dhoti with angavastram and a hat of matching colour. Minimal proportions of gold are to be found on His neck and arms and ankles. His iconography is incomplete without the goad in His right hand and the strong, muscular tail that flourishes high behind Him above His head. The all-important mount where the live-giving sanjeevani grows, a mass of purple and green and flowers, is borne on His left hand as He flies.
