Ragamala (mala or garland of Ragas) paintings, also known as a Ragachitra (a Chitra or pictorial representation of Raga) are a tradition of paintings that bloomed in the medieval period, in courts and corridors of the Indian royals. A raga or musical note is believed to represent and stir a particular mood or emotion in the listener's mind, ranging from divine devotion to seething love. Each Raga is related to certain Raginis (the feminine form of musical notes) who are addressed as the wives of the Raga, and Ragaputra (son or Putra of Raga) who are the manifestations of the modes through which a Raga is performed on a musical instrument.  A raga is also associated with a time of the day, a phase of romance, and the emotions or Rasa that consequently emerge. The seventh-century text “Brihaddeshi” describes the Raga as having the ability “to tint the soul of the listener”, a facility best displayed in the lively Ragachitra or Ragamala painting.

Inside a dark and floral patterned border, the scene of a royal palace’ terrace is presented. In the background are a saffron-tinted sky, a rising sun, rows of hills, a lake full of fresh lotuses, and leaf-laden trees. It highlights that it is morning time, when the Ragini Gunakali, the wife of Raga Malakaus is sung according to classical Indian music tradition. Ragini Gunakali is a romantic Ragini, which represents the joy of a Nayika (heroine) who is prepping her surroundings for the arrival of her lover. Ragini Gunakali in this watercolor on canvas painting by Kailash Raj stands on a takhat (traditional bed) with a chowri (fly whisk) in her hand, using which she welcomes the rising sun.

The romantic description of this Ragini can be that her beloved had promised to see her on a particular date, and the bustling joy of the Ragini on seeing the morning sun marks that the day of their union has arrived. A mustard yellow-colored floral printed lehenga, orange chunni, and pink choli, along with ornaments of rubies, emeralds and pearls form the ensemble of the youthful Ragini. Behind her, one can see a white marble structure that is adorned with inlay work and richly colored drapes, and near her feet is a large maroon masanad (round pillow). On the floor of the roof is a gold plate with bowls and a surahi (wine carrier).  The waves of the chowri in Gunakali’s hand, the luster of the sun and fragrant flora in the background, the richness added by the marble architecture, and the active posture of the Ragini’s form- all bring to this Ragamala painting a distinctive sense of liveliness, one which can be seen as a visualization of a blissed heart. The use of ginger tint on the leaves of the tree signifies the falling of sunlight on them, a reminder that Ragini Gunakali belongs to the first prahar or pahar of the day (first three hours).

A devotional and soft note, Ragini Gunakali in this Ragamala folio will bring to you the lively and positive ambiance of the morning.
