Goddess Durga has always been associated with fierceness and strength for she is the one who was formed when all the gods merged their powers in one divine Shakti. In this elegantly exclusive Tanjore painting, her glory is etched in incalculable gold. Goddess Durga is the epitome of motherhood, destruction of evil, protection, and motherhood. Though tales of her majesty are countless, there is one where her devotees find her shining the brightest: the triumph over the demon Mahishasura. It is where her fury and capability reach their peak. The buffalo demon Mahishasura was tormenting the Devas and waging wars against them. She was called upon to help and they fought for fifteen days before he took the form of a buffalo and was slayed by Goddess Durga's fierce trident. Finally, she defeated him and restored dharma and the world back to order.
She can be seen embracing eight arms in this artwork. While one of the hands is blessing the devotees with her palm facing forward, her other seven arms are carrying different weapons. For example, a conch shell, a discus, a sword, a thunderbolt, a serpent, a mace, a set of bow and arrows, and a trident. She rides atop her vahan, a majestic lion as it tears into Mahishasura's head, ready to slay him at any moment.
