Nidhivana Radha-Krishna

$455
The fair Radha sits gracefully next to Her divine lover. Her blue, brocaded silks wind lusciously around Her limbs as She motions them in keeping with His music. The gossamer veil descending from beneath Her crown floats about Her, revealing rather than concealing the beauty of Her torso. In the left hand She holds a freshly plucked lotus from the stream in the foreground, while the other She rests lovingly on His broad shoulders.

The peetavastra of Lord Krishna, garments (‘vastra’) the colour of peeta (a natural yellow hue, much like the gracious colour of gold), contrasts sharply with Radha’s turquoise lehenga. In addition to the same, the green and red silk of His girdle and angavastram bring out the gentle dusk of His complexion. His head is turned lovingly to Her side, without whose alaukik (ethereal) presence His music would not be complete. Their composure of countenance and the language of their bodies are such as to convey mutual affection of the finest, most enriching order.

The themes of life and beauty pervade the Nidhivana. A gorgeous temple in the background, the domes of which rise against the skies of the setting sun. Pristine birds migrate homewards, while lotuses and birds of an equally beauteous variety gather around the lovers’ feet upon the river flowing by. They are seated amidst dense foliage teeming with life and verdure, the green of their twin halos in keeping with the life-affirming vibrance of it all.
