The art of painting took new directions under Jahangir in significant ways. He was strongly influenced by Persian painting and was a great admirer of European painting and more so of nature. The artists in his atelier carefully observed the animal, not only physically but its ways and habits as well because their animal portraits were not just dry animal studies, but emotive too.

This goat is one of the several ruminants of the Bovidae family having hollow unbranched horns. The characteristics of the species is excellently captured with maximum possible detail. This black, white and tan animal looks exotic enough to tempt anyone to want to copy its likeness for posterity. The face, the front body and the forelimbs have zebra-like black stripes. The eyes are gentle and the horns, as mentioned earlier, straight and hollow. The artist faltered in perfection while depicting the ear. The hairy texture on the body is adeptly done with a shade couple of degrees darker than the base with a single hair brush.

The painter has used the pigment that could most accurately express the actual color of the skin or fur of the animal. One cannot fail to admire the minute observation of the artist by which he was able to paint the exact features of the animal. Contrary to most contemporary paintings, the sky has uneven shades of blue, instead of quick horizontal stripes. Solid ground is shown under the feet of the goat with a little vegetation painted for effect.
