A persistent theme in the artistic history of India is the sensuous female figure, often provocatively poised. Sensuality and sexuality are both relayed through glance, gaze and posture and into the realm of voyeurism.

The image of women bathing in the moonlight is charged with suggestions of eroticism. Narrow of waist and erect of bearing, she wears a choli or a bodice that barely contains her breasts. A long narrow fabric makes the pretence of covering her lower body too. Her body posture is seductive and going by the smile on her face, is intentional. A flowering tree behind her forms a canopy over her, the flowers in soft pink unable to match her beauty. The moon shines and the beams lend a silver glow to the river, making it look unreal and fantastic. Two swans swim at leisure in the distance. A single swan in the foreground symbolizes the lonely status of the woman, for whom her own sensuality and youth is difficult to handle.

The brilliant colours of the woman's attire stand jarringly against the mystified moonlight background.
